2001 Annual Law Office Newsletter PDF Print E-mail

                                           Fifth Year Anniversary !

Our office is celebrating another anniversary.  Many thanks to our staff, clients, and referring attorneys who have contributed to the success of the office.

New Law Clerk, Office Promotion, Web Site

We are pleased to have Brentt Palmer with us this summer as a law clerk.   He just finished his first year with Mercer University Law School, and will be clerking for a judge in Pensacola for the second part of the summer.   Congratulations to assistant Sarah Hammett on her promotion to Office Manager.   We also have a new and improved web site – check it out !

                         PPA – What is it?

In November, the Food and Drug Administration warned that dozens of over the counter cold medicines and diet pills containing phenylpropanolamine, or PPA, could cause hemorrhagic strokes, especially in young women.  If you suffered either a heart attack or stroke and were taking medication containing PPA, please feel free to contact our office for a consultation.  We have associated with a firm who has a team of physicians who will review your medical records to determine if a claim exists.

                     School Referendum Passes !

Mobile taxpayers did the right thing in choosing to raise taxes in order to fund the financially strapped school system.   It is sad that our children do not receive a higher priority on all current tax dollars and that this referendum was even necessary.

Jody Bishop elected County Judge

Jody Bishop was overwhelmingly voted in as district court judge of Baldwin County.

                       Guest Speakers Needed

James continues teaching at Spring Hill College as an adjunct professor of Business Law.  He is always in need of judges, lawyers, and business owners to come and speak to his Business Law class as a guest lecturer.  It only takes about thirty minutes and the experience is rewarding.  Call Sarah to schedule an available evening that matches up with your area of practice.

              Should an employee complain?

On April 23, 2001, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the anti-retaliation provisions applicable to employees who have complained of sexual harassment in the work place are not available unless the employee can prove a violation of sexual harassment law (Title VII) first.   Previous case law had strongly emphasized the need for an employee to complain to upper management in order to recover in a sexual harassment suit.   When confronted with harassment, the

employee is now placed in a difficult situation: complain and possibly not be protected from retaliation or, fail to complain and have subsequent litigation dismissed due to the employer’s lack of notice.  See Clark County School Dist. v. Breeden, available in PDF format at http://supct.law.cornell.edu.

               ABA Pledge of Professionalism

Our office is pleased to have unanimously signed and adopted the Alabama State Bar Pledge of Professionalism offered through our Bar Association President Samuel Anthony Rumore, Jr.  We will continue to strive for professional courtesy and decorum in everything we do.

                     Our Areas of Practice

Our office continues to work in the areas of personal injury, car accidents, wrongful death, domestic relations, corporate law, business formation - representation, criminal defense, and estate planning.    We appreciate the continuing referrals from Mobile and Baldwin attorneys

Alabama State Bar Rules require the following in every attorney's advertisement: "No representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services tobe performed by other attorneys."  Our entire firm protects the confidentiality of client information. Florida requires the following for their attorney advertisements: "The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be solely based upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience." The content from this Newsletter has been modified since it was originally published.
