2008 EVENT CALENDAR 2009 EVENT CALENDAR 2009 Presidential Inaugural Ball On January 20, 2009, a new President and Vice President will undertake the oath of office. The week of inaugural balls and parties begin on approximately January 15 and end the evening of January 20, 2009. Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival March 20-22, 2009; 10am-5pm; Downtown Fairhope. This is probably the best arts and crafts show in the country. 231 white tents line the streets of picturesque downtown Fairhope, entertaining an estimated 250,000 visitors each year. This is an event for the entire family, with classic festival food, and live local entertainment. Please remember too the annual BARC pet adoption on Saturday at Compass Bank. Spring Fever Chase Saturday, March 21, 2009; 8am; This is a 10K run and 2 mile fun run/walk through the neighborhoods of Fairhope, overlooking Mobile Bay. Bring the entire family, the jogger stroller, even the dog, and have a great time. Register for the event through either Wachovia or Thomas Hospital. Azalea Trail Run 10K and 2K Fun Run 2009 Saturday, March 28, 2009; 7:50am. This is a mega race on a flat, fast course through the historic streets of downtown Mobile. Typically, the weather is perfect, and the azaleas are in full bloom. The race starts on Government street near Barton Academy and ends at the Mobile Civic Center. In addition to the cool race shirt given to all participants, the after party always a great time for the entire family. For more informatin, visit http://www.pcpacers.org or call 251.473.7223 Flora-Bama Mullet Man Triathlon Saturday, April 18, 2009; 7:30am; swim 1/4 mile, bike 15 miles, and run 4 miles; This event is sponsored by the Flora-Bama bar and restaurant, which is located at the Alabama Florida state line. The set up for the participants' bikes and gear is just across the street on the Ole River side. The swim is a short one in Ole River, and the bike ride is a single loop on Perdido Beach Blvd, west towards the Gulf State Park and back. Finally, the run is a single loop from the Flora-Bama to underneath the Alabama Point bridge and back. Typically, the weather for this event is outstanding, and the post-race party is terrific. Registration usually sells out quickly so register early. 2009 Kentucky Derby May 2, 2009, Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky. Always held on the first Saturday in May, it is more than just a race, it is an experience. From the unique experience in the Infield, to the hat parade, to the thousands of mint juleps served over the weekend, this is a can't miss event. For more information, go to www.kentuckyderby.com Russell Lands Fourth of July Blast July 4, 2009 Alexander City, Lake Martin Alabama. This is one of the largest fireworks shows in the Southeast. Thousands of people watch the show from their boats on Lake Martin. Free Admission. 2009 City of Fairhope Fourth of July Concert and Fireworks Show: Thousands set up on the bluff overlooking the Fairhope Municipal Pier and watch the fireworks at dusk, or watch from their boats out on Mobile Bay. In addition, the Baldwin Pops band plays patriotic style music immediately before and during the fireworks show at Henry George Park, on the bluff directly above the pier. Free Admission. Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa July 19-25, 2009 This is an annual seven day bicycle ride across the State of Iowa. It is the longest, largest, and oldest touring bicycle ride in the world. Due to its popularity, participants are chosen by lottery, permitting only 10,000 riders in the event. Tomatina August 26, 2009 Join 40,000 international revelers for a town-wide tomato fight, which includes over 100 tons of tomatoes, at Buñol, a village of the Mediterranen province of Valencia east of Spain. Book a room well in advance of this event. Octoberfest 2009 Munich Germany, September 19, 2009 through October 4, 2009. With nearly six million visitors, it is the largest festival in the world.
