James Dorgan has been an adjunct professor of Business Law with Spring Hill College for approximately ten years. Recently, one of his classes was the subject of an article in the Mobile Press Register, including a story on online song downloading and copyright infringement issues. The highly competitive class consists of 13 quizzes, a midterm and a final exam. Students are expected to orally brief cases, and be able to present both sides of many contentious, contemporary legal issues.
Past guest speakers have included Chief Bankrupty Judge Margaret Mahoney, general practice attorneys Rob and Clark Stankoski, American Cancer Society public relations director Lindsey Spear, Criminal Defense Attorney Pascal Bruijn, Estate Planning Attorney Mark Eiland, Injury Attorney Andy Citrin, CPA Carole King, Medical Malpractice Defense Attorney Win Stuardi, small business owner and entrepreneur Sandy Dahmer, general practice attorney Buzz Jordan, intellectual property attorney Greg Friedlander, financial advisor Jeffrey Marston, US Asst. District Attorney Mike Anderson, Internet copyright specialist Susan Godwin, former legal aid attorney Joe Bolton, SHC graduate and local attorney Laurie Angerdina, and many others.
Practical application of the law is heavily emphasized. Extra credit is given for designing a new website and business idea, attending and writing about a municipal or small claims case, and performing any number of service or community based charitable type events.
Many students from Dorgan's Business Law class have gone on to law school, graduated, and are currently practicing law.
